Fighting Flystrike
An extensive flystrike prevention and management CD has been produced as part of AWI’s settlement agreement, reached in June of this year, with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The settlement ensured PETA would cease targeting retailers who sold woollen products.
Fighting flystrike is a practical guide for Australian woolgrowers. The training tool has been developed by Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) to help woolgrowers:
- better understand the factors that lead to flystrike; and
- implement management plans to prevent and where necessary treat flystrike.
The program is divided into six clearly defined modules that allow woolgrowers to quickly and effectively access information that best suits their situation. Each module is accompanied by practical tools and case studies to demonstrate how other woolgrowers are managing the risk of flystrike.
By implementing the management practices discussed in this guide and adopting an integrated approach to the flystrike risk, woolgrowers will be able to progress with confidence toward and beyond the 2010 phase out of mulesing.
