Alternatives to mulesing

AWI is developing alternatives to conventional mulesing for the cost effective control of breech blowfly strike.

You can find out more about AWI's commitment to 2010 at www.wool.com.au/2010.

Background

At present, mulesing is an essential part of sheep husbandry where skin is surgically removed from the breech area to reduce flystrike.

However, the wool industry is investing millions of dollars through AWI to improve prevention and control methods for blowfly strike, including a non-surgical alternative to mulesing.

AWI does not underestimate the difficulties of introducing new technologies in the wool industry. There are several approaches being developed.
