Additional Traits in Sheep Genetics

Adding to an already significant resource of information, new knowledge is being gathered to identify traits that will improve productivity and profitability.

In order to continue building on the genetic information available for use by Australian woolgrowers, AWI and Meat and Livestock Australia are expanding the areas of investigation under the Sheep Genetics program and the range of traits for which it offers ASBVs (Australian Sheep Breeding Values).

The additional traits that are under investigation include:

  • Visual breech traits including breech cover, breech wrinkle and dag scores

Visual breech traits

A standard set of scores has been developed in the form of a pocket guide and is available by calling the AWI helpline on 1800 070 099.

  • Visual wool quality traits including wool colour, wool character and pigmentation scores

  • Visual conformation traits including jaw, shoulders, feet and legs scores

  • Temperament scores based on flight speed and maternal behaviour

Once ASBVs are available through Sheep Genetics for these traits, sheep breeders will be able to make more informed decisions on valuable traits when buying rams and selecting ewes for breeding, to boost both product quality and productivity.
