Breeding tools in development

A suite of breeding tools currently in development will further enhance the use of the existing benchmarking systems in Australian Merinos through the addition of new traits or improvements in accuracy of the existing traits via DNA technology.

  • Additional Traits in Sheep Genetics

    Adding to an already significant resource of information, new knowledge is being gathered to identify traits that will improve productivity and profitability.

  • DNA Marker technology

    AWI funded research in conjunction with Meat and Livestock Australia is currently developing DNA based tests for parentage and performance traits as well as ways of integrating this information into current breeding systems.

Overview

In addition to supporting national genetic evaluations, AWI is currently expanding the range of genetic tools available to Australian woolgrowers.

This program involves the improvement of existing tools to enhance genetic evaluation methods and better service the needs of breeders. Each of these tools are in development and will be available soon.

AWI continues to invest heavily in genetic research to identify, with scientific clarity, the most productive and effective sheep breeding systems.

Fundamentally important to this though is the creation of information packages that can be easily understood and quickly implemented by Australian woolgrowers.
