China
As a global centre for production and as Australia’s most significant export destination for wool, issues affecting trade with China are vital.
Overview
China is Australia’s most important trading partner for wool. AWI is committed to maximising this relationship for the benefit of Australian woolgrowers long into the future.
This year saw AWI open an office in Shanghai staffed with seven employees dedicated to driving the demand for Australian wool within government, trade, industry and private sectors.
AWI also travelled to the Shanghai-based Spin Expo to launch its Australian Merino fashion knitwear collection for fall-winter 2007-8. This is testament to AWI’s belief that China is now the world’s focal point for garment production.
Business relationships centered on research and development continue to be the most directly beneficial strategy for growth. The launches of Merino Active and the machine-washable suit both with hugely powerful Chinese partners in 2006 are merely the tip of the iceberg for AWI in this territory.
