Managing Waterways
The Rivers & Water Quality sub program of Land Water & Wool provides woolgrowers with practical information on how to manage waterways and gullies on farm.
With improved management and strategic grazing, water quality, riparian condition and biodiversity can be improved. Revegetation along waterways can provide shade and shelter for livestock, contribute to disease & pest control and add to the aesthetic value to the farm. The sub program demonstrated that infrastructure, such as fencing and dedicated watering points is a key first step to enable strategic grazing management of riparian zones.
Active management of gullies through revegetation, grazing exclusion or engineering works in severe cases, is important as gullies reduce the amount of productive land, limit access to paddocks and degrade water quality through sediment and nutrient runoff.
