Woolgrowers need to be armed with the right information and decision making tools to allow them to plan and prepare to be in a position, 12 months from now, that allows them to continue operations.

The key aim is to minimise losses by assessing the drought impact on 2007 income, look at continuing costs until the drought breaks such as livestock feeding costs, overheads and debt servicing, along with the costs of restarting each enterprise in 2008 if this becomes an option. This will determine what their financial position will be in 2008 and if this is sustainable.

In managing this process of planning, decision making and taking action against drought producers need to think about a range of situations and issues such as:

  • What are the most effective ways to minimise losses?
  • What will the costs of restarting each enterprise be in 2008?
  • What information is available to help plan for the season ahead?

By planning, assessing and seeking advice, sheep producers will be in the best situation possible to take action to maintain sustainable operations.
