The final month of 2004, saw US imports of textiles and apparel lift in both volume and value terms, year-on-year with a steady rise continuing in the first month of 2005.
China's textile and apparel exports to the US grew by 63 per cent in Q1 to over 2.8bn sq m, according to preliminary data released by the US government. The figures have prompted renewed calls for urgent safeguard protection from the domestic textile industry in the US.

The EU could fast track safeguard measures on China's textile imports after all 25 member states backed the decision to conduct a formal investigation. But it is still hoping China agrees to voluntarily restrict its exports.
The EU has approved the imposition of sanctions on US goods from 1 May as a result of the US's failure to remove trade rules that the WTO has ruled illegal, reported AFP.
Despite increased price pressure from other fibres in March, synthetic fibre prices managed moderate gains.
