Data from China's State Statistical Bureau shows retail sales on wool-type apparel in major department stores during September experienced double-digit growth across most key items with the exception of cashmere and wool knitwear, which dropped in volume terms year-on-year.

UK apparel sales were disappointing in September and October. Although there was a marginal rise in September volume compared with August, sales were down in October, dragging down the growth in non-food store sales. The effect of continuing weak sales was being felt by wholesalers.

A look at consolidated data shows Italy's wool fibre imports during the first half of 2005 were 68.1 mkg clean equivalent, down moderately compared with January-June a year ealier. Greasy wool imports were similarly lower whilst wool top import was marginally lower. Although scoured wool imports showed a rise there was a large fall in noil imports.

While Australian raw and semi-processed wool exports to China were well up for the period July 2005 to September 2005 in total, exports to China of broad wool (predominantly 28 to 30 microns) fell significantly year-on-year, outstripping - by around double - the fall in availability of these wool types in Australia so far this season.

Agreement has been reached between the US and China to manage the exponential rises in textile and apparel imports until 2008 and will come into force on the 1st January 2006.

After record breaking hand knitting yarn sales in the US last year, sales remain strong in 2005.
EU-15 imports of raw, carded and combed wool fell moderately (by volume) in the seven months ending July 2005. Imports of wool fibre by the EU-10 acceding countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Rep, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus) by contrast showed a marginal increase during the same period.
