A look at the consolidated data reveals winter apparel sales in Korea were subdued, affected by warmer-than-usual weather. In particular, demand for outerwear such as overcoats, blousons/jackets and suits was severely affected and the season total sales of those items were reported to have declined compared with a year ago.

Warm winter weather pushed early-spring apparel demand in Japan since January. According to the "Family Income & Expenditure Survey", January expenditure by average household on 'clothing & footwear' rose above year earlier leveles, for the first time since September last year. Men's outerwear and women's shirts/sweaters purchases were particularly strong.

China's textile and apparel exports grew strongly in 2006. Exports of chiefly wool products lifted in both volume and value terms in 2006, although at a less robust pace. Exports of worsted yarn and fabric were soft, while womenswear exports stood out as the strongest growth category.

Wool's competitiveness relative to its competing fibres decreased in the first three months of 2007. In February, the price of 21 micron wool was getting close to 4 times the price of synthetics and 6 times the price of cotton in US dollars.
