The Australian wool market finished 2.4% lower, on average, at sales in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle this week.
Data from the Japan Family Income & Expenditure Survey reveals floor covering purchases in Japan were seriously cut in the first quarter of 2007. While some recovery was evident in April and May, expenditure in the first 7 months as a whole, was well below year-earlier levels.

From the start of the season to the end of the season, prices for 17,18 and 19 micron Australian wool in US dollar terms increased very strongly. In contrast, cashmere prices increased by moderately, alpaca prices remained steady, and mohair prices decreased strongly. Fine wool also equalled or outperformed cashmere, alpaca and mohair in season-average price gains.

The Australian wool market finished 1.9% higher, on average, at sales in Newcastle, Melbourne and Fremantle this week.

New Zealand's raw and semi-processed wool exports for the 2006/07 season to May posted an insignificant decrease on the same period year-on-year. However, there have been significant declines in exports of greasy and carbonised wool. About 3/4 of New Zealand's raw or semi-processed wool export is scoured wool which has remained steady or increased slightly on the same period last season.

Japanese domestically traded yarn prices have continued to rise throughout 2007 with prices remaining at historically high levels despite some easing of raw wool prices. In July, 2/60s yarn prices stabilised at a 13-year high.

The Australian wool market, with the assistance of a rapidly falling exchange rate, finished 2.0% higher, on average, at sales in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle this week.

The Australian Wool Testing Authority (AWTA) tested a record amount of fine wool (<19.5 micron) in the 2006/07 season, surpassing the previous record set in the 2004/05 season. Across all micron categories however, AWTA tested wool for the 2006/07 season was moderately less year-on-year.

Figures released by the International Textile Manufacturers' Federation (ITMF) show world-wide shipments of long-staple spindles or wool spinning technology increased moderately in 2006 year-on-year. The increase in shipments halted a decline in shipments since 2001. However, the 2006 shipment level remained significantly lower than the 2001 level.

Australian consumers have been fairly upbeat due to a healthy job environment, surging economy and until this week, a continued hold on interest rates. However, the more discretionary areas of retailing have felt the effects of the bounce in petrol prices and the weather. Clothing and soft goods experienced the biggest fall, while sales at furniture and floorcovering stores grew modestly.

Wool production in China gained moderately in 2005 despite relatively static sheep numbers, however fine wool production recorded a moderate decline in 2005.

In the first sale after the mid-year break, the Australian wool market finished 5.8% lower, on average, at sales in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle this week. This was also the first sale since the suspension of processing of new applications for import quotas in China.

South African raw wool exports increased solidly in the 2006/07 season to April compared with the same period last season, according to data released by Cape Wools. Export values increased as well, with strong rises in the South African wool price indicator.
