World cotton prices maintained their upward trend in the first 7 months of the 2007/08 season. The rise in cotton prices has not improved the wool to cotton ratio which in January 2008 climbed to 6.0 compared with 5.9 in December 2007. The increase was due to exceptionally strong January wool prices, as expressed in US$. In January, the 21 micron indicator reached the highest level since the collapse of the Reserve Price Scheme in February 1991.

Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has shown the volume of Australian wool exports in November 2007 (clean equivalents) dropped moderately compared with the same month in 2006. On the other hand, the value of exported wool rose solidly year-on-year.

A slow down in polyester staple prices at the close of 2007 was partly due to weakening market conditions in Far East Asia. In particular weakening demand and a build up of stocks in China pushed polyester fibre chip prices lower than a month earlier. Monthly falls in Far East Asia were partially offset by rising polyester prices in the US. In Western Europe, polyester staple prices remained firm, supported by solid demand.

As an EU member, trade between Bulgaria and other EU member states is free from custom duties and average wage costs in Bulgaria are the lowest of any EU member country. While EU production of textiles and apparel has fallen during the last 6 years, Bulgaria's production of textiles and clothing has increased very strongly.

Consolidated data shows that October 2007 was a reasonably solid month for apparel sales in Italy after two flat months previously. October apparel sales were the best performer after food sales. However, looking forward, most indicators and some preliminary data suggest A/W apparel sale results will not be particularly positive for Italy.

The Australian wool market finished 0.9% lower, on average, at sales in Newcastle, Melbourne and Fremantle this week It was another week in which the US exchange rate rose to its highest level for this season and the highest since the late 1980's.
