Animal Health - Mulesing alternatives: become involved

The Australian wool industry has made a commitment to to phase out conventional mulesing and develop alternatives by 31 December 2010. This commitment was made in November 2004 by Australian wool and sheep industry leaders.

Only by making this commitment has the Australian wool industry retained the support of international retailers and processors. The industry has kept, and continues to keep, these retailers and processors fully informed about all the research AWI is doing and the progress of that research.

AWI was given the task of finding alternatives to current mulesing practice.

Now there is an opportunity for Australian woolgrowers to get involved. AWI has reached the final stages of development of two alternative mulesing products, clips and needleless intradermals, and is negotiating with key animal health companies to take on the licences and market the technologies.
To achieve this critical timeline, AWI is looking for growers to be part of the roll-out and trials for one or both of these mulesing alternatives with the most immediate potential.
